I do like Ubuntu and Knoppix. But neither is known to be good with proton. Linux has made great strides to making it much more new user friendly. And yet, it still has a long way to go to being a solid replacement option for windows. Especially in the gaming side of things.
Linus Tech Tips did a couple of videos on daily driving a Linux OS for gaming and streaming. It took those guys quite some time to install, setup and configure compatible software in order just to play some games. And I don't think any of them managed to sort out all the kinks.I've tried messing around with my other laptop Acer Aspire V 17 Nitro Black Edition using a spare SSD I have, to install Knoppix first. Then Ubuntu. Both ran on the system very well for the most part. But making it able to play steam games was a nightmare.
Here is the nice thing about those 2 Linux distros. You don't have to dedicated to fully installing them if you don't want to. They can be configured to run as a live OS and run from a CD or flash drive. Well, I know that Knoppix can, and Ubuntu used to. I'm not sure if Ubuntu still has that option. But you could fully use them that way. Configure them and even install what you want on them. But keep in mind that they run from a self-configured ram drive. Meaning if you shut down or reboot, you will be starting fresh again.
