AH! So you WERE on the same wavelength as me! I wasn't sure I was right though about that as I know the least about hardware out of any of you guys. 😕

There is a reason why portable HDD's have a drive with a shorted sense pin.  It keeps people from buying a cheap high-capacity portable drive, shucking the drive from the enclosure and using it directly in their PC's.  And why they seem to work perfectly fine in an external drive dock.  The USB interface doesn't use the sense pin connection.
