You know I hate scammers. I have had honey traps for scammers and have reported and shut down sites and servers of scammers. But I realized I had never made a thread about security stuff. I thought this would be good for sharing security tips not just by myself but from websites or any of you other members who want to add good online practices, known scam warnings (online shops, fake antivirus sites & programs, Trojan, other malware, social engineering), and password tips, etc.
Also, different types of scammers are usually from different countries depending on the scam, but that does not mean they are all from a certain country and not from another. There are good people in the same countries scammers are in. Typically, the majority of Tech Scams and Refund Scams are from India and Romance Scams and Prize Winning Scams (419) are from Nigeria or other countries in the continent of Africa.

If you and Dave can post about your love of computer hardware it only makes sense that I would post about my love of cyber security :)

This is the right place for this. Thanks Dave.
This guy was certainly personally opinionated about his browser choices. Most of them I would never use. And others I've never heard of. But nice to see what a few of them have to offer. I personally use Firefox and Edge. Both are heavily modded though. I do agree that it is a pain to have to manually setup any of these browsers to your likings. But then again, I don't reformat my system every month either.
-
Ya I always mod. I have always liked to make what I use as I like it instead of how they thought I would use it.

Even though an old one still points out the importance of changing passwords often as well as keeping on top of all sights you have accounts on and be aware of breaches.

Ya I feel is Google or YouTube are pushing ads even MORE than ever before then they NEED to be on top of the scam ones to not let people fall victim to them. The whole reason I have my parents use AdBlock programs is for the sole purpose of protecting them from falling for scams and scareware and fake alerts.

I got a little different info. For cover your tracks, my FF says it's strong and says it's 64-bit. But Edge says it's weak on ads and trackers and strong on fingerprinting. But thinks it's 32-bit when the browser is using the 64-bit version..
The privacy one thinks I'm using a 32-bit laptop. I guess it can see my battery backup?

What is crazy is how persistent Microsoft is with forcing users to use a Microsoft account with Windows 11. When news gets out about how to get around that so users can create a local account, Microsoft patches that trick too.

Ya I think more and more people will move to other OS at this rate. Just how far can MS push its users?

If you can find the current statistics, you'll find that a lot of users have abandoned Windows 11 and most of them have gone back to Windows 10.

MS won't be put off by that. Look what they did to get people to leave Windows 7 behind.

And they will do it to Windows 10 users too once Windows 12 comes out. It's a predictable cycle the MS has done time and time again.

That is the list of the 10 worst offenders? All still very popular games. And that seems to suggest that there could be many, many more.

When modding a game you must get the mods from a trusted source but even then .. have any of you ever run into a mod for a game you play that had malware in it?
I used to run a few mods on my WoW account back in the day including at least one he mentioned but never had any issues and never had an account stolen. But back then I did not worry about these risks as I wasn't into security yet (well, very little back then. I was aware but not truly aware of the extent of its reach).
And the background mining I had mentioned before but did not know was a thing until this year.

I think the last version of Norton I have ever used was Norton system works for windows 95/98. It was garbage then, and it's far worse now. MacAfee used to have a standalone tool called Macafee Stinger that did help me fix a few computers back in the day. But it's useless now. And I can't tell you how many times I had to fix a computer that got so bogged down with "PC Repair Utilities" that they became completely unusable. We are talking nearly 30-minute boot times for a very trimmed down install of windows. And 5-to-ten-minute response time clicking on any app.
I had one client that had so many tool bars installed on their browser that you could only see maybe 5 lines of text at the very bottom. I got so fuming mad at them for that. They didn't see that as a problem.

Oh man those dreaded browser bars! Yes I have seen people who just clicked install with any popup that told them to install those because they are "fun" not realizing they slow things down and are definitely not needed. I haven't seen anyone do that in the last few years but they were bad back then. The only ones I have seen use a bunch of PC Repair programs were people who fell for those Window Popups that say your computer is at risk and to click accept and installs those. That was back in the time before tech call-center scams I find. Now even the scam centers will uninstall the extras and just run one when they are rummaging through people's computers to find bank info they can steal.
-
Yeah, thankfully that's not as much as a big deal these days. But there still are a handful of apps out there that want to install tool bars on your browser.
-
That’s still a thing?
-
That’s still a thing?
Unfortunately, yes. But more computer savvy people have learned to pay attention to the app installers instead of just spam next.
-
That’s still a thing?
Took the words out of my mouth. I thought programs no longer try that anymore but now try to install other programs they get a cut from. I have learned to never just let anything install the way it wants but also go custom and check everything out and uncheck a lot of things that are just bloat.
