I have heard about this.

Should we be worried or was it patched?

As far as I know, it's not been patched yet.

I just saw that video actually. This exploit has been overlooked and dumbed down by Microsoft for so long because they didn't think it could be dangerous. I'm glad someone managed to capture it.

I don't use a password manager, but if you do, it might be of interest. Last Pass got hacked.

I don't use any password managers either. I just write them on slips of paper.
-
I'm pretty sure KT uses one. might be why the name of that one sounded familiar. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure KT uses one.
I wouldn't be surprised if she does. I know a guy I use to work with at the Volvo dealership used one. And he use to sware by it, like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. ::)

She's under the weather right now but I hope this isn't something that affects her. I didn't get time talking to her to bring it up.

Hey Sandman, not sure if you had seen this.
Yeah, I did. That's when I started tuning into KrisFix youtube channel. What he has been noticing is it's not a driver level issue. The cards that are turning up dead are used mining cards.
-
Yeah, the card issues had nothing to do with the driver issues, but sounded like there were plenty of issues with those drivers anyways.
-
Indeed. I'm still on driver 22.11.1 and having no problems at all. I've been very happy with this card so far. And it's a relief to know that it isn't going to self-destruct if I update my drivers.

I am aware but they are encrypted and I change all effected as there are breaches. I also write down pw due to bad memory. 1Password Has Better Security than LastPass. Both provide security features such as: End-to-end AES 256-bit encryption — Both use this unbreakable encryption algorithm to protect all the data in your vault. But anything is only as safe as their holes and leaks right?
I have heard of Bitwarden which is said to offer the best free tier for password management reviewed. Bitwarden is open-source software, and its code undergoes regular audits by independent researchers, making it less vulnerable to hacks and breaches.
A vast majority of cyber-security specialists say that password managers are safe to use. After all, a password manager uses advanced encryption to protect your credentials, while without it, your passwords are accessible to anyone.
However, with breaches it is important to stay on top of them and change when needed.
Unfortunately, password managers have been hacked before. OneLogin was hacked in 2017, and LastPass was breached in 2022. In March 2023, LastPass issued a statement that the breach resulted in unauthorized users gaining unencrypted access to customers' vault data, including information like usernames and passwords.

I was just worried if your passwords were at risk, because I thought that was the service you used for that, if not great. I understand your need for that kind of service. I posted the subject a while back. only because I new of you using one/ incase it was that one. Ok enough of that.

Ya and I read it but also got an email telling me what to do about it and to keep my account safe and what was at risk and to change the main password as it was the only one at risk since the other ones were behind that wall. I often have to change passwords anyway because of breaches in general and get notifications of them as well. Check out https://haveibeenpwned.com/ (https://haveibeenpwned.com/). You type your email address in there so they can tell you if any logins tied to that email address it will tell you which logins have been compromised due to breaches so that you can change your password to stay safe.
Never reuse the same password on any other sites but use a unique one for each site. Why? Because of breaches.
In April 2021, a large data set of over 500 million Facebook users was made freely available for download. Encompassing approximately 20% of Facebook's subscribers, the data was allegedly obtained by exploiting a vulnerability Facebook advises they rectified in August 2019. The primary value of the data is the association of phone numbers to identities; whilst each record included phone, only 2.5 million contained an email address. Most records contained names and genders with many also including dates of birth, location, relationship status and employer.
Even if passwords were not gleaned from breaches, the information could aid in hackers trying to gain access to your websites even by claiming to be you saying they "lost the password" to get a password reset. Or even to use your information (name, date of birth, address, etc) to try to create new accounts in your name such as opening bank accounts in your name for scammers to use (hackers sell this info them scammers on the black web). You can even search if that stuff has been found stolen online using https://dehashed.com/.
Many times passwords are not breached but other info that could easily lead to them figuring out your login and password can happen. For example, In October 2013, 153 million Adobe accounts were breached with each containing an internal ID, username, email address, encrypted password and a password hint in plain text. The password cryptography was poorly done and many were quickly resolved back to plain text. The unencrypted hints also disclosed much about the passwords adding further to the risk that hundreds of millions of Adobe customers already faced.
Logins are never 100% protected as long as you do login online connecting to any site online. It is just the nature of the net. To keep safe you must stay on TOP of security and the protection of your accounts and logins.

I know it could make my life a bit easier using a password manager. But the way hackers go after just about anything these days, I don't trust any online service.

Well as long as you don't reuse passwords for multiple sites and your passwords are not dictionary words and your security questions are not ones that can be answered by looking on any of your social media sites, then you should be fine for the most part.
Also I had posted about it years ago (http://www.killerz.dns2go.com/smfbb20/index.php?topic=80.0;topicseen) when it first was a problem so not like I do not know about it.
Expect a leak. And be on top of it when it happens.
The thing is if people honestly think their passwords are 100% protected anywhere they have another thing coming to them. That is why you always have to be on top of them. All security notices and all leak notices to change them right away and to never use the same one in more than one spot. I have seen more breaches happen through sites I am a member on a lot more often than password encryption services. There will never be a perfect solution as long as hackers are working as hard as security experts.

I keep a small stack of post-it notes on my desk with login info for everything I use online. And most of them are random gen passwords because I get annoyed trying to figure out some crafty password I could remember.

Hahah I imagine One Eyed does the same thing as you! Perhaps it is a guy thing :P
If I did that I would lose those sticky notes though. So I keep a book but since the password encryptor I have gotten a bit lazy at that. I do try to keep it updated however. I guess we are all lucky all 3 of us live alone :P
-
Yeah, I still have a dedicated password book, (small notebook, paper kind) but there are still some sticky notes in there. I have to update it.

Perhaps it is a guy thing :P
I don't know. Perhaps it is. It just works well for me because some sites like my bank and cell phone provider as examples, make me change my passwords fairly often.

This is why it is important to know other search engines. I use more than one simply because some can find things others cannot but the ones that can search more results are the ones that do naughty things like that.
The MOST Popular Search Engines:
- Google
- Bing
- Yahoo
- Baidu
- Yandex
Source: Most Popular Search Engines (https://www.dopinger.com/blog/most-popular-search-engines)
I am not going to list all the pros and cons of those so the link is there. Click it if you want to read about each of those.
Best Alternatives to Google
- DuckDuckGo (https://duckduckgo.com/)
- Brave Search (https://search.brave.com/)
- Bing (https://www.bing.com/)
- DogPile (https://www.dogpile.com/) (I remember this from the 90's and was surprised it is still in use and updated but does look dated and isn't as good)
DuckDuckGo is the king of privacy-friendly search engines. Using it is like using the incognito mode on Chrome.
You can also get the DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials browser extension to block trackers and keep you safe online. From my OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I will say that some online bank use will NOT login if you have it installed however...
DuckDuckGo isn’t perfect, though. According to CNET, it uses Bing to power its results; for that reason, it has some Microsoft trackers that it is contractually obligated to use.
Nevertheless, it’s still light-years ahead of Google regarding privacy.
Brave is a privacy-focused browser with ad blocking, tracker blocking, and other safety features. It now also has a search engine, called Brave Search.
Brave Search is the default search engine on the Brave Browser. However, you can also use it at search.brave.com, whether you’re using Chrome, Firefox, or any other browser.
Brave search tracks nothing – not what you search for, not what you click on. Since it doesn’t have any user data, it can’t give it to governments or sell it to advertisers.
Unlike DuckDuckGo, Brave Search uses its proprietary index to bring you results. That means that it will never be forced by Bing or other large search engines to include hidden trackers.
However, it does rely on Bing for most image and video results. Also, it uses fallback mixing to check results from Bing if it can’t bring up accurate results of its own.
It uses community suggestions and feedback to improve its results and bring you more accurate ones.
It also has a beta Goggles feature, which allows you to customize your own search results with rules and filters.
Brave Search is supported by ads, and Brave plans to incorporate those ads into the Brave Rewards program in the future.
Bing is the second-largest search engine in the world. The main reason to use it instead of Google is its rewards program.
You’ll get rewards just for browsing the web on Bing. You won’t earn much – but every few weeks or months, you cann redeem a small gift card for Amazon, Walmart, Target, Starbucks, and other stores.
Not only that, but you can also get scratch-and-win rewards, enter sweepstakes, and more.
DogPile is an interesting addition to this list. Founded in 1996, it is older than Google, Bing (originally MSN Search), and AOL.
It has a weird name, and its interface looks a bit outdated. However, DogPile continues to fulfill its original goal – to be a metasearch engine that includes results from multiple other engines.
One of the issues people have when choosing a search engine is that some engines might be more relevant for different searches. For example, you might prefer Bing’s results for one keyword search, even if you prefer Google’s results for a different keyword search.
DogPile includes results from Google, Bing, Yandex, and other search engines. It will filter out duplicates, allowing you to get more results than you would get from using just one engine.
However, DogPile is no longer as practical as it used to be, as many search engines it used to rely on for its results have gone offline or been bought out by bigger search engines like Google.
People all know about Google but it was NOT the first Search Engine by far! Heck I remember the days of Search Jeeves and AltaVista and DogPile search engines! But the FIRST Search Engine was Archie. It was made in 1990. That was before I used a search engine as those were the days before the net. I was only into BBS back then and did not yet own my own computer.
Did you know that Google changes its algorithm between 500 and 600 times a year? In a way that is excellent as it prevents CEO's from manipulating the search results to benefit only their companies. This I learned about over a decade ago before I even had my own domain.
Backrub was Google’s first name. Interesting, huh? Even I did not know that.
The funny thing is that now, when people are searching for something online, they now use “Googling” as a verb to mean searching for something on the internet. I still say searching. I am old school ;) but the kids today .. this is what they call it.
The average search engine result page includes 10 organic listings and about 4 paid advertisements.
Myself, I use a combination of Duck Duck Go and Bing. My mom uses Yahoo Search. I also use AdBlock Plus but still if you use Google you will always get the ads that are embedded in the searches above and below the results you want.
I am not going to list the pros to using search engines here as we are all geeks and already know what they are off the top of our heads. But do you know all the cons? Especially of popular ones like Google?
Here is a list of cons about search engines:
- Privacy concerns
- Spread of false information
- Bias
- Advertising
- Addiction and overuse
- Lack of critical thinking
- Keyword manipulation
- Algorithm changes
- Information overload
- Spam and malware

I don't think that is a bad thing honestly. If you haven't logged into any of your Google services in over 2 years, you most likely aren't going to care.

My brother Shawn wants to keep his google account for when he loses a job and needs me to email him his resume again or need to get back onto his FB that he also forgot his login for. I always have to remind him what his gmail account password is because he never remembers. Yes I know it. Like I had said previously, my brothers are mechanics not computer smart geeks. I am the computer geek of the family so they come to me like I come to them about car help (if they have time which they usually don't).

I hate to break it to you but a modern day technician will be spending countless hours on computers and scan tools doing diagnostic work.

Ya which makes YOU more modern than them. Neither work in a shop currently. Chances are Shawn knows how more than the other bro.
-
Well, if your brothers intend to work on anything made after 1996, they will need a decent OBD2 scan tool. Funny how even the simplest jobs like changing the engine oil or replacing brake pads would require the use of a scan tool. Most modern cars require a scan tool to reset the maintenance reminder. Or cars with electronic parking brakes require a scan tool to fully open, then close the parking brake actuators.

I am left to assume that you have one of those budget OBD code readers that can only access the PCM or ECM? Powertrain Control Module or Engine Control Module. Those are perfectly suited for the average DIY'er that wants to see firsthand why the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light or more commonly called a check engine light) is on. And possibly try to fix it themselves. Or at least have a rough idea of what they may be facing when they bring it to a shop for repair. Good for you Angie. I'm proud of you!
But what I was referring to was a more in-depth scan tool. Something that can access every module in the vehicle. Read codes, delete codes, read live data. And even program some modules. Unfortunately, scan tools like that cost hundreds to even thousands of dollars. And for the persons that like to work on their own cars, these are a must have tool. I am shocked and amazed that neither of your brothers have one.

Ok, I think that got of the original topic. but more not great news. He's not just talking about Youtube.

The bottom line is, Google and YouTube are upset that they are losing revenue from Adblockers. So, they are forcing users to turn them off so ads can get through. Some of these ads might be malicious and they don't care because they are getting paid.

Is old now. They are already doing that. I am so tired of the 1 and a half minute ads youtube has put on YouTube and now that my adblocker isn't working against it I am getting even more of them. With MalwareBytes at least there are less but you still get those 1 and a half min ones at the start. :( I was forced to have to allow them some info on me just to get more geared to what I like ads because I was getting majorly bombared with pot and gambling ads! Like over and over again extremely repetitively! >:[> :flamemad: <:-----:> :salute:

On top of what the video covered, some security also has adblock so when you disable adblock in the browser and any browser plugins / addons the youtube platform may still detect you are using an adblock and still refuse to show you the video or any video. Another reason many are leaving. Not only that but subscriber counts are dropping as YouTube is pissing them off meaning this is also having a negative effect on those who run channels and pay for their payment tier. Plus in other countries that $13.99 per month is more as it is USD and with the economy today that can be hard to afford. On top of that the ads are so often it is more than TV commercials. At least on TV there is some variety where as I felt every single ad was about pot and gambling. This is very annoying. If they want ads to entice people and not be blocked don't show the same ones over and over and over and over again which will only piss people off. It is worse than an annoying kid saying your name over and over and over again while tugging on your clothes but you not having the ability to tell them to stop, or ask what will get them to stop.

That is pretty underhanded what YouTube has done to Firefox and yes that would be illegal. They are not supposed to inhibit in any way any other browser. Guess they thought they would never be found out about it. However, that would warrant more investigation to prove it is targetting only certain browsers and is not something else in the individual browser that is also causing the slowdown. In Brave it seems to do the same thing as Firefox except that when it starts and then stops like in the video it doesn't show the adblock notice or any ads but instead just puts it in a perpetual pause mode that you cannot get out of.
Part of the reason I hadn't used Firefox lately but did not know the cause of those slowdowns when it came to YouTube. You both know I LOVE Firefox and was surprised when BOTH of you started using it when you were both hard core IE users for the longest time.
Currently using Brave but when I tried Ublock it caused YouTube to not play at all leading me to believe that YouTube became aware of Ublock being one of those really good at blocking the YouTube ads. From what I know of coding it would appear that in Brave at least they have put an overlay that loads after that first second and then you can't click on anything. Perhaps that overlay was supposed to be the black box saying to allow ads but with Ublock you don't see the black box but just can't click on anything. The clear overlay is obviously still in place.
I will still have to investigate but I believe AdBlock has a feature you can click on certain aspects of the page to block certain elements as well.
Okay just tested it and I was correct and now can play YouTube without ads again.
However, I blocked the overlay, NOT the proper culprit script. Maybe you can help me pinpoint the correct one so I am inadvertently blocking other function such as scrolling.
Also to only gets ONLY ads that you don't mind seeing: https://myadcenter.google.com/customize

Version number 3.21

That's strange. I have the same plugin but mine is version 3.17.1. It says it's up to date.
-
I have same as Sandman.

Are you having issues with it on YouTube? Other than it was stalling to load videos for me a little while ago, it still works as intended with no red flags.
-
Adblock did update a few times now and I get the same. Some pauses at the start of video play as ads try to pop up but so far it is doing good. Seems to work best on Firefox and MS Edge I am finding. When I feel better I will have to get it working on my mom's. She uses Firefox but I don't know what she did as YouTube blocked her.
-
They blocked her? I hope it's not permanent.
-
They blocked her? I hope it's not permanent.
I watched her the other day. She REFUSES to click the allow ads so of course it goes to 3 videos until you are blocked and then she gets blocked. She does it to herself because of her stubbornness she has out of fear. I think my brother LJ is the reason for her fear. She is always afraid to letting them have control over her computer. I can't get through to her to just allow and then adblock updates and we don't see the ads anyway. Her own stubbornness gets in the way but you know what that is like. ;)
-
I usually see the start of the ads. But they blink by so fast that it's not a bother at all.
-

That's the thing. She uses Firefox. But she is so stubborn. If she clicked to accept ads she would not actually see them!

If you click yes to ads while she is not looking and has the adblocker installed, she won't have any more problems.

Tried that but ran into problems I did not have on my own PC or laptop. I would need more time on her computer without her watching me to update the adblocker and see what else is causing any issues. When I said yes then it showed an iframe box in the middle of the youtube video window with adblock in there not loading properly. I do know YouTube has been trying to update their anti-blocking tech even more as even on my Firefox ads were starting to slip through again. No problems however with Firefox on my own computer though. Just the laptop. On the laptop I have been using Edge without any issues.
-
I've not been having any issue with Edge either.
-
Well, seems something may have changed on YouTube again. FF with adblock plus is working fine but Edge with adblock is stalling hard. I tried another PC with Edge on it and no adblock installed, but that works fine. I went back to my PC and I tried disabling adblock on Edge and now it works fine. So, it seems it's not Edge directly or something wrong with my PC. It's just YouTube at it again.

I suspect it is YouTube targeting something in AdBlock for Edge itself (for each browser type AdBlock is a little bit different due to the coding of the particular browser. This is why there is not just one install for all browsers unless it is Windows wide and not browser specific which YouTube would not be able to target. It might have to come to that though as YouTube is not done their fight).
I have noticed the same thing.
-
supposedly it was the adblockers themself, some update they recently put out was not right. I think it has been taken care of but. I think with all Youtube has done lately most would find it hard to believe.
-
I didn't see any change in adbock version numbers during that ordeal. And why was it only effecting Chrome based browsers? YouTube is trying to say that it wasn't them this time. But I know it was them just testing the waters.

I agree. And YouTube has already been caught doing shady things previously.

There has been a bit of buzz going around about all this happening with YouTube. YouTube is just not generating the ad revenue that they think they should be getting. And very few are willing to spend the $10 a month for a premium account. Honestly, with all the benefit's you get with a premium account, the ad free experience is the only one I would get anything from. And at $10 a month, it's just not worth it. So, it's getting painfully obvious that YouTube wants adblockers to go away. But with so many domains out there literally flooding their sites with ads trying to make a little free revenue. Many of them have a warning popup that instructs you to disable your adblocker/popup blocker to continue browsing. Sites like those will most certainly deliver the user some malicious code. It's no wonder why so many people use adblockers.

It's no wonder why so many people use adblockers.
Because YouTube is so determined and not giving up, I decided to make a whole thread dedicated to YouTube's Shenanigans! http://www.killerz.dns2go.com/smfbb20/index.php?topic=230.0

Good idea. Thanks.

I didn't watch this video all the way through. But there was a TikTok challenge on how to steal a Kia or Hyundai with a USB cord. It got so unbelievably bad that Hyundia and Kia dealerships flat out stopped repairing theft victims and several major insurance companies blacklisted issuing new policies for them. I have seen instances where insurance companies have denied theft repair costs or had raised the deductible so high that it would force the customers to pay out of pocket. Not to mention the dozens, if not thousands of people injured or killed stealing these cars.

Wow that is absolutely INSANE!

I saw that popup on my new computer a few times after I had downgraded it to windows 10. I ultimately had to go into the BIOS and manually disable the TPM feature to make it stop.
After I had upgraded the BIOS in my gaming rig, TPM suddenly became active. It used to be disabled by default.
-
I've noticed a lot of the bios updates are making it so the default settings have the requirements for W11 enabled.

I woke up one morning to my computer having had rebooted with that screen. I was not happy.
-
Just go into your BIOS settings and disable the TPM feature. Actually, you will be switching off from the on-chip TPM to an add-on TPM card. Since you don't have a TPM card, you are effectively disabling the feature.

Ah okay I just saw this now. What I had done is just said I want to stay with Win 10 but it keeps bugging me by the clock with the "Windows 11, version 22H2 is ready for your PC" icon. It is not a pop up but just that it is always there just like when Windows has an update it wants to install and then eventually just installs it when the computer is idle (if you have Pro like me or if you have Home it will just install it right then and there). I wonder if Windows 11 will just be on my system one time when I wake up.

And here I thought Steam verified all games were REAL and not against their TOS before they allowed them to be on their platform.. But then watching the video it became obvious it was a devious spoof of real games to manipulate ratings to make a profit on key seller sites. Crazy!!

This has been going on for quite some time now. And had lead me into a habit of checking only the negative reviews.

Ha same here! I have been doing that for at least the last year! Especially with how fake reviewers have been making fake positive reviews for well over 2 decades now!
-
What's strange is sometimes the negative reviews are fake too.

Ya but usually only when the reviewer or the one paying the reviewer is looking to tarnish an image.

I can't argue with that.

Ever since Overwatch went to a live service, I can't help but wonder. If it starts doing badly, will they just shut it down?
-
Overwatch is a pretty big name, but yeah it could happen. unless things change.
-
Well, Blizzard was recently purchased by Microsoft. And it has been officially called that the PVE content that was the whole talk of why OW2 was released in the first place, has been scrapped completely.

Then what is the point anymore of Overwatch 2? You know MS is trying to buy up as much as it can and some good things may come out of it but not really what people want. Microsoft has never really been known to actually LISTEN to their users.
-
I have lost a lot of interest in OW2 because they announced the scrapping of PVE mode. But it's still a fun game.

Agreed, plus their new balancing is just weird and affects gameplay, plus they giving out free some skins people spent hundreds on. Ugh

I've seen that too. Skins I had to grind for or even pay for are popping up for free. One skin I hope never comes back around for free is the pink mercy skin.

Soo many scams on indeed! There’s even brick and mortar places that use indeed to hire a bunch of people, use em for weeks/months as free labour, then never pays them, "fires them", then rinse repeat.

I saw on my news feed today that Sony has in fact pulled Hell Drivers 2 from Steam. Is that true?

Here is an update.

That's kind of cool that nearly the entire community banned together and made Sony rethink their policy. Well played.

Yes excellent! Sony has always done underhanded things and have wanted to do this for awhile. I am glad the community made them change their minds. However their steam page still says it is required .. hmm.. (https://i.giphy.com/USUIWSteF8DJoc5Snd.webp)

I never shopped there but whenever it comes to buying through China that does not surprise me. Still, it is rather shocking.

Temu is just selling the stocks of shenzen market in china. So yeah its all from there.

And I keep getting real life friends sending me invites to Temu. That is HOW they get the free stuff I guess? By getting new users. It is extremely popular to send invites on Facebook and other social media.
-
There is usually some form of a catch to anything offered as "free". And with organizations like TEMU, it's commonly something that is basically worthless, but enough to reel in the suckers.
-
I've actually heard about scams like this.

Some of that is regular entertainment on sites like TikTok. Our society is full of degenerates that get their kicks from causing harm to others.

Oh, do I have a good one to share. As this one affected me at work when I couldn't perform any vehicle emissions inspections because the states database servers went down for hours.

Yes Dave told me all about it and gave me links to post since he isn't posting here anymore. I am moving this entire thread to the geek section as it should have never been in the general section in the first place.
I have also found a few videos I wanted to post on this:
